Nestled among the famous red rocks of Sedona, Arizona, the axial layout of the residence balances the remarkable views of the landscape and engages a dialogue with the serenity of the natural and unique environment. The luxury residence houses a curiosity to explore, with guest housing and a crescendo of open living space and dining.
Inspired by rectilinear axes of modernist mid-20th century design, this high-end residential project provides an enclosed courtyard open the the scenic landscape of the foothills of Tucson. A playful twist of material and structure creates serendipitous spaces with intrigue of light, shadow and comfort. Materiality of the interior and exterior blur the line between inside and out, inviting landscape, light, and shadow.
A contemporary take on the mid-century modern bungalows of Palm Springs. The overarching concept entailed a layering of public to private spaces starting with shared gardens that transition to private courtyards which buffered the private residences. These courtyards are hidden and defined by masonry walls that step in and out, softening the line between the public and private. Vegetation colors the space, carpeting the horizontal and peaking through the vertical.
Centering as a functionally simple yet elegant solution to a warehouse and workspace, TuSimple offers a new perspective to utilitarian architecture. Function and form have typically been conceptually opposing elements, but this exercises the possibility of the two living in harmony.
The Greek Heritage Park is a space intended to celebrate the history and linage of the Greek Society at the University of Arizona. The plan is informed by a major and minor axis system; the major axis connects to the adjacent street and symbolically heralds the major themes of Greek life at the university, while the minor axis celebrates the subsequent tenants of Greek life and those that have contributed. Each axis is defined by a path and spatially constrained by a system of colonnades.
For years, the motels along the western side of Tucson’s I-10 freeway have been a less than desirable destination. In 2017, a developer out of california saw an opportunity to introduce a higher end temporary stay facility that could serve the multiple events that this area supports. The developer wanted to take the motel and bring it back to its original form and celebrate the mid-century modern foundation that it was originally designed in. The existing lobby was gutted and transformed into a modern lobby and support spaces for clientele. This space then connected to a newly designed pool area that included tiered seating, gardens and exterior lawn space.
This gallery is a collection of speculative works which live through the hand and mind. To highlight this process is very important to us. Historically, the idea to establish design through drawing encapsulates the value of architecture, and truly connects the designer to the space through levels of immersion and imagination. This practice reigns true even to this day, despite our technological reliance to produce architecture.
